Acoustics
The objective of applied acoustical engineering, Designed
Acoustics basic business, is to provide
a spatial environment where, at one extreme, listening is of prime importance
(theatres, for example) and at the other extreme, where sound will not result
in physical harm (industrial plants).
Assembly and Public Spaces are examples of spaces where the ability to hear is of varying degrees of importance. They include: Theatres and Auditoria, Churches, Class Rooms and Lecture Halls, Restaurants, Museums & Display Spaces, Stores and Retail Spaces, Concourses, Open Plan Offices, Music Practice Rooms, Recital Halls, Conference Centers, Board Rooms. Some spaces demand quiet: Libraries and Museums.
Acoustics is the general consideration to ensure that the acoustical environment, as influenced by the architectural designs and interior finishes, is compatible with the use of the space.
A sound reinforcement system is usually necessary to provide the clearest program sound -- speech, music, etc. -- to the listening audience in a natural and unobtrusive manner.
Control of noise from mechanical systems, building services, activities and outside intrusions is an important part of providing a good listening environment.
